Look out Hermitage, this has the grip, the earthiness, the herbs and spice, and above all the massive, ripe, complex fruit to compete. The layers of this wine just keep unfolding;the longer it breathes, the more it gives you. Crushed rock, lead pencil, Asian spice, blackberry, coffee and caramel...it never stops. What a superb achievement.
2009Alain Paret ValvigneyreRhone  15.001  89
Pure and focused, with delightful black cherry, red currant and lavender notes stretching out through the sandalwood-tinged finish. Relies on elegance more than power.

2006Alex Gambal Clos Vougeot - Grand CruRed Burgundy  135.002  93
A round, fruity style, but there's no shortage of grip. Black cherry and black currant flavors set the pace, before fine-grained tannins, spice and mineral flavors enter the mix. Fine length.

2006Andrew Will Champoux Vineyard - MagnumRed Blend  140.002  92
Firm, with a tart balance to the bright raspberry and brooding black fruit flavors. A distinctive minerally note emerges nicely on the expressive finish. Needs time to soften. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
2002Andrew Will Ciel du ChevalRed Blend  50.001  95
Gloriously structured, this extraordinary effort blends 44% Merlot, 28% Cab Franc, 18% Cab Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot into a wine that reveals itself in sculpted layer upon layer of scent and flavor. Citrus peel, plum, wild berry, red currant and spice are set upon a base of rich mineral and rock, with precisely cut tannins.
2007Andrew Will Ciel du ChevalRed Blend  60.001  96
Andrew Will Ciel du Cheval Red 07 - The balance between fruit and structure is well played out in this vintage. The classic and austere qualities that this vineyard has each year are well drawn out. As with most American wines, this wine projects more fruit in its youth than its European reflections. Over time we will see this difference shrink as the wines move (hopefully) into more complex incarnations of themselves. We would like to see this wine well stored for three or four years. As is almost always true with Andrew Will wines you can enjoy them now, but they will provide greater complexity over time.
2007Andrew Will SorellaRed Blend  74.001  96
Andrew Will's flagship wine is called Sorella; the 2007 Sorella, sourced entirely from the Champoux Vineyard, one of Washington's finest sites, is made up of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. Aromas of toasty oak, espresso, Asian spices, incense, black currant, and blackberry lead to a firmly structured wine with impeccable balance and serious aging potential.

Vivid ruby. Sexy, expansive aromas of red and dark berry liqueur, cola, star anise and fresh flowers, with a suave vanilla quality gaining strength with air. Sappy, deep and penetrating, offering a velvety texture and powerful raspberry and blackberry flavors. Shows the ripe side of the year but there's very good energy here too. 2009Bergstrom De LancellottiPinot Noir  60.002
The wine is dark ruby red in color and offers up a potpourri nose of sweet baking spices, red currant, cherry and savory herbs. The intense mouth-feel is also very perfumed and is dominated by red raspberry, cherry and plum flavors and is framed by the vineyard’s trademark mouthwatering acidity and suave and silky ripe tannins. This wine is very pretty in nature but dense and brooding at the same time which makes de Lancellotti Vineyard a pleasure to drink young or age for 10 years.

Aromas of honeysuckle, brioche, lime blossom, fresh-cream and pear with a kiss of almond entice the palate as the wine is swirled in the glass. 2005Betz Pere de FamilleCabernet  60.000  97
The fragrance is almost otherworldly; sweet, dense and lightly lifted. This is a sinewy wine, that begins with compact power and focused, tart red fruits—predominantly raspberry and currant. At first juicy and tart, with hours of breathing time the wine broadens out into a wider spectrum of Cabernet fruits; cassis, blackberry and black cherry.

2009Brovia D'Alba Sori Del DragoBarbera  30.002  91
Good full, deep ruby-red. Bitter cherry, crushed black fruits, leather and flowers on the perfumed nose; conveys an impression of noble rusticity. Juicy, very fresh and pure, with outstanding density to its dark berry and licorice flavors. Wonderfully sappy, energetic barbera with a rich, long, almost saline finish featuring firm tannins for the variety. This very strong barbera invites you to eat and drink.
2008Brovia Nebbiolo D'Alba ValmaggioneNebbiolo  30.002  88
Moderately saturated medium red. Liqueur-like aromas of red fruits, with a lightly medicinal character. Supple but quite dry and savory. Offers fresh red fruits in the middle palate but finishes distinctly uncompromising, with substantial dusty tannins. A tad rustic.
2008Buisson-Charles Mersault Bouches-CheresWhite Burgundy  75.002  93
As elegant as the Goutte d’Or is, the Bouchères goes it one better with its mélange of white peach, spiced pear and dried rose petal aromas that slide gracefully into precise yet quite densely textured flavors that brim with dry extract and superb length. This is an explosive wine that finishes bone dry and manages to combine impressive power with balance and focus. I actually prefer the delivery of this to the Goutte d’Or but at present at least, it doesn’t quite have the same degree of complexity. A qualitative choice but both are worth considering.

2009Chateau Montelena Napa ValleyChardonnay  45.001  90
Bright yellow. Lively aromas of apple, citrus fruit, mint and licorice. Juicy and vibrant, with almost painful mid-palate cut. Still youthfully tight, but this no-malo chardonnay displays good underlying density. The persistent finish shows good cut. Clearly the product of a moderately cool growing season. Montelena's chardonnay is vinified to dryness in tank, then ages for several months in 10% new oak, on the fine lees but without stirring. I suspect this will evolve slowly.

The 2004 Meritage Artist Series is 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 11% Malbec, and 4% Petit Verdot aged for 20 months in 73% new oak. Purple-colored, it has a Bordeaux-like nose of pencil lead, scorched earth, espresso roast, black currant, and blackberry. This leads to a structured wine with a supple texture, layers of spicy flavors, plenty of complexity, and a 45+ second finish. It will evolve for 6-8 years and drink well through 2034.

Firm and focused, with ripe currant, plum and spice flavors, picking up a green tobacco note as the finish persists against refined tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot.

2003Chateau Ste Michelle Cold CreekCabernet  25.001  88
Firm in texture, reticent in flavor, with modest blackberry and smoke flavors weaving through the chewy tannins, lingering delicately on the finish.
2004Chateau Ste Michelle Cold CreekCabernet  26.001  91
This is pure Cabernet from one of Washington’s oldest vineyards. Cold Creek is a hot site, and its grapes are scattered throughout many of the Ste. Michelle brands, often providing the core fruit. Here is the essence, a wine that opens a bit grudgingly, but has structure and concentration if you take the time to let it blossom. Dense cherry and cassis fruit is tightly wound with balancing acids. The use of new oak is restrained, but sufficient, and this is a wine that should age nicely for many years.
2005Chateau Ste Michelle Cold CreekCabernet  30.001  90
Firm and chewy, with grippy tannins around a lean, focused core of tarry blackberry and other black fruit flavors. Needs time to soften.
2006Chateau Ste Michelle Cold CreekCabernet  28.001  89
Ripe in flavor, with crisp tannins around a core of black cherry and cola flavors, lingering on the lively finish.
2007Chateau Ste Michelle Cold CreekCabernet  28.001  90
Features firm tannins up front, but the suppleness underneath carries polished blueberry and currant fruit past hints of sage and spice notes. Finishes with grace.
2009Chateau Ste Michelle Cold Creek VineyardCabernet Franc  30.001  89
It’s a pleasure to see a Cold Creek Cabernet Franc once again, here blended with 17% Cabernet Sauvignon. Forward, young and showing plenty of new oak,not yet fully integrated, it has enormous potential, based on the tight purple and black fruit that is considerably masked at the moment. Give this one some years in the cellar, and it should reward you.
2009Chateau Ste Michelle EroicaRiesling  24.001  90
Light and tart, the acidity balanced against gentle sweetness as the tangy grapefruit and apple flavors linger beautifully.
2001Chateau Ste Michelle Eroica Single Berry SelectRiesling  200.001  96
Dark gold and hugely aromatic, a noseful of mineral-, pepper- and spice-scented pear and honey notes, ultrarich and silky, with honey, apricot, baked apple, tropical fruit and clotted cream flavors that just don't quit. Sensational stuff. Try to keep hands off to see it develop.

2005Clos Du Mont-Olivet Cuvee UniqueRhone  40.002  92
Harmony, beauty, resonant flavors that travel for miles on the tongue. A touch of classic Mont-Olivet sandalwood blends with caramel and candied ginger on the peppery, perfumed nose. Wonderful texture on the mouth, with a concentration that is deep but not overly weighty. We love the delicious tension that holds each sip together before it bursts into a firework display of red fruits and electricity on the palate. A blend of 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah, the rest Mourvèdre and a southern Rhône field blend of older-vine nobility.
2006Clos Du Mont-Olivet Cuvee UniqueRhone  45.002  91

90 Points Wine Spectator. Firm in texture, with generous blueberry and currant fruit pushing through the layer of chewy tannins, persisting as hints of minerality and spice weave through the finely balanced finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
2004Col SolareRed Blend  70.002  94
Tasted right after bottling, this new release from the high-profile Ste. Michelle/Antinori Red Mountain project may be the finest Col Solare to date. The blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and a splash each of Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot. Half is Horse Heaven Hills fruit, one quarter Cold Creek and one quarter Wahluke Slope. This is a chewy, muscular wine, dense with plummy fruit, and layered with flavors of earth, soy and black tea. There is a hint of baked, pruney flavor that is restrained enough to add interest rather than detract.

Bright, dark ruby-red. Black cherry aroma lifted by pungent minerality. Utterly silky and sweet, with terrific mineral lift and an impression of lower alcohol giving this suave, mouthcoating wine a light touch. Most of the grapes came from the Annapolis Vineyard, with some from Seascape. While the vintage was cool, it gave incredibly long hangtime. Dry, crisp and delicate, the wine has a silky voluptuousness that makes it irresistible, with pie-filling cherry and black raspberry flavors finished with Asian spice. New French oak adds toast and vanilla sweetness.

2006Jean-Marc Millot Clos de Vougeot - Grand CruRed Burgundy  135.003  92
From less than 1 acre in the Grand Maupertuis section of the Clos … Mild reduction cannot completely hide the earthy and spicy dark berry fruit aromas that possess plenty of underbrush, forest floor and sauvage nuances that continue onto the rich, full and sweet flavors that are more elegant and refined than the typical example of Clos de Vougeot, all wrapped in a slightly austere finale of excellent length. This is a Clos de Vougeot of finesse, which is relatively rare. (
2006Jean-Marc Millot Echezeaux - Grand cruRed Burgundy  125.002  92
2.59 acres total from parcels in Echézeaux du Dessus, Poulaillères and Clos St. Denis measuring 1.17, .49 and .39 acres, respectively). This too is very fresh and bright with a darker fruit profile nuanced with an ample array of spice elements including soy, clove and anise that introduce racy, pure and punchy middle weight flavors that possess excellent depth and again, impressive flavor impact on the harmonious and wonderfully long finish.
2006Jean-Marc Millot Grands Echezeaux - Grand CruRed Burgundy  150.001  93
From a tiny .49 acre parcel - 5 cases imported. Not surprisingly, this is the most complete wine in the group with its classy and ripe spicy blue fruit and cassis-infused nose that slides seamlessly into rich, pure and nicely concentrated flavors that possess terrific depth and length. It’s interesting because while this has the best raw materials, it also just has that extra element of breed which sets it apart from the other wines more than the simple differential in qualitative terms.
2006Jean-Marc Millot Villages "Aux Faulques"Red Burgundy  30.002  88
A 4.4 acre Monopole in Comblanchien. A very fresh nose of earthy dark berry fruit that offers up distinct animale and underbrush notes and leads to sweet, delicious and firm but not aggressive flavors underpinned by slightly rustic tannins and good length. Solid quality.

The 2004 Chardonnay shows that wonderful liquified rockiness, as if someone took a couple of boulders, threw them in a Cuisinart, and was able to extract some liquid, interwoven with tangerine oil, nectarine, quince, pear, and popcorn and honey. Quite layered, full-bodied, but with terrific acidity and vibrancy, this is a sensational Chardonnay that is set for 8-10 years of life.

This wine is gorgeous from the moment the cork is pulled. Sweet fruit—berries, currants and jam—is perfectly matched to more subtle scents of sassafras and tobacco. Nicely woven together, this youthful wine coasts along on a magic carpet of seamless flavors, gently sliding into a lightly toasty finish with a lick of bacon fat. Though fairly soft, it seems like a good candidate to improve for 5 or 6 years.

A rich, lush, well-structured and seamless Pinot Noir, the 2006 Lenné brings brambly cherry fruit with streaks of herb, leaf and spice. The alcohol, pushing close to 15%, shows up as a slight burn in the finish, but the wine brings in interesting notes of mint and chervil in the aromatic finish.

2004Long Shadows Chester Kidder - MagnumRed Blend  125.001  90
The fruit is forward, a mélange of tart and spicy berry and currant flavors, and there is enough concentration to warrant additional cellaring. The influence of new oak is unobtrusive, though it is still a vital part of the mix. Overall, a nice step forward for this Long Shadows wine. 58% Cab, 29% Syrah, 10% Cab Franc, 3% Petit Verdot.

2005Long Shadows PedestalMerlot  50.001  96
Consistent with previous releases, this Michel Rolland effort is a soft, silky, smoky wine that introduces itself with round cherry fruit and then charges ahead with layers of licorice, citrus, coffee and rock that enliven the finish. There is plenty of tart raspberry fruit to open, and the balancing acids to give the wine a tight core. It’s a very polished and appealing balance of forward, approachable fruit married to more elegant, ageworthy tannins and acids.

2005Long Shadows Poet's LeapRiesling  20.001  93
Poet’s Leap was the first wine to be released under the Long Shadows portfolio, and this 2005 is clearly its best yet. Old-vine Riesling from Dionysus and Weinbau form the core of the wine, which is immaculate, rich and generous. The fruits sound like a county fair in summer—melon, stone fruits, citrus, honey—and the mix of residual sugar (about 1.6%) and racy acids is thrillingly on target.
2006Long Shadows Poet's LeapRiesling  20.000  94
Ripe pear, melon, and white peach mingle with a streak of honey. Old Yakima Valley vines contribute concentration, adding herb and mineral to the fruit. The residual sugar is about 1.4%, keeping the alcohol just under 13%, with acids that keep flavors buoyant and precise.
2007Long Shadows Poet's LeapRiesling  20.000  92
Emphasizes refinement over effusiveness, presenting its pear and green apple with hints of warm slate and spicy floral notes edging in gently. Finishes just off-dry.
2008Long Shadows Poet's LeapRiesling  20.001  92
“Riesling floweriness and Fuji apple prettiness are on display from the very first sniff. Acidity keeps the wine somewhat sleek, crisp and lively on the palate, and while it could work as a stand-alone aperitif drink for those who like the minerally side of the grape, it has the depth and inner structure to be happy alongside dishes like sautéed sea scallops wrapped in a piece of smoky bacon.”

2006Long Shadows Poet's Leap - Carmina BuranaRiesling  25.002  NYR
Carmina Burana is a dry Riesling (minimal residual sugar), fermented half in oak and half in stainless steel tanks, then aged for five months in a traditional German oval cask. The introduction of oak imparts a richness that balances beautifully with the wine's bright and lively acidity. Fragrant aromas of fresh citrus and green apple are accented by honeysuckle and peach flavors with an added zest of minerality.
2008Long Shadows Poet's Leap - Ice WineRiesling  85.002  95
Deep gold, the color of honey, picked at 53° brix, this is unbelievably dense and concentrated. Yet with the acidity in place, this wine has balance, support, and depth. It’s not a fat, sugary blob. This drinks like a Canadian icewine. Honey, tropical fruits, candied orange, butterscotch, butter and toasted nuts—it just keeps on going.

The purity of this wine is impressive. It has a straight line of mineral, flint and grapefruit running through it. Around this, there are layers of fresh apples, lime zest and a tight, taut structure. The one downside to what is a fine wine is that it, like many Roederer vintages, is too young. Give it 4–5 years.

This is an exceptional wine, as is the vintage. The fruits—grapefruit, crisp red apple—balance with a fine yeasty character. Complex, rather delicate nose melds peach, red grapefruit, clove, menthol, almond and white flowers. Tighter and more penetrating than the Charmes, in a distinctly steely, minerally style. This is a dark wine, just this side of brooding, with ripe blueberry and cherry fruit, softly chalky tannins, whiffs of smoke and splashes of pepper. Open every stop on your Cabernet church organ: Pure cassis. Mountain freshness. Baking spice. The pencil lead of Graves in that less-than-overripe varietal character. This is unadulterated Cabernet pleasure, three words that have never come together in my mind before. Grown at an elevation of 1,800 feet, 14 miles from the coast, this vineyard traces its heritage back to Chateau Margaux, where Emmet Rixford selected cuttings for La Questa in the 1890s. Martin Ray propagated cuttings from these vines to plant Mount Eden in the 1940s, replanted in the 1980s with a selection from Ray's vines. Between the cool site, the exceptional vintage and the pedigree of the vines, this is a true California classic."

Firm in texture, with a polished core of cherry, raspberry, dark chocolate and dusky spice flavors, finishing with a floral note, all lingering well. Should only improve in the bottle.
2003Owen Roe DuBrulCabernet  60.002  94
Owen Roe's most sought after wine and one of Oregon's most highly coveted bottlings. About 100 cases made from a small vineyard high up on the north side of the Yakima Valley where extreme heat and cold stress the grapes and produce small amounts of intensely concentrated fruit.
2004Owen Roe DuBrulCabernet  60.001  91
Deep red. Sweet raspberry, tobacco, menthol and musky espresso on the nose, along with sexy smoky oak tones. Lush and silky in the mouth, with a penetrating sweetness to the red berry and spice flavors. Very round, broad wine that expands impressively on the back half and lingers long on the lush, sweet aftertaste. The sexy oak component can't hide the wine's flamboyant cabernet character.

Good medium red. Musky, slightly raw aromas of red berries and pepper. Sweet on entry, then peppery and uncompromising in the middle, with a much more restrained sweetness to its red berry, earth and tobacco flavors. Moderately dense but not at all thick-and quite light on its feet. Finishes with a serious dusting of fine tannins. I like this style.

I understand that this bottle is rather "commercial", however, it's a really nice bottle of wine. Two hour decant. Good rich color, nice thick legs. Nose is rich and complex, a good balance of fruit and tannins. This complexity carries through on the palate. Very well balanced, there's good fruit, but also balancing tannins. The finish is clean, fresh and of decent length.
2005Rodney Strong Alexander's Crown - MagnumCabernet  50.001  89
Wasn't exactly overawed by this offering, but it's quite decent, just not exceptional. A bit of oak and dark fruit on the nose, dark color, fairly decent balance with a touch of bitterness on the finish. It tastes like a lot of second-tier California Cabs, and one ought to expect more for the price. It won't disappoint, but it won't win you any kudos, either.

Not as immediately obvious as the beautiful ’04, this is a more tannic, structured wine, yet it shows the pedigree of the vineyard. Cherry-pie filling, rhubarb, cola and cinnamon spice flavors take over the palate, leaving the impression of balanced, upscale richness in a silky texture. Almost no one got fruit in Walla Walla in 2004—a freeze year—and it’s a sure bet no one got Syrah fruit any better than this. A bottle-full of thick, black juice, sappy and saturated both in color and pure fruit flavor, this massive Syrah matches its brawn with brio—peppery spice, delicate herb and toasty cracker. 2003Spring Valley Vineyard UriahRed Blend  40.002  94
Supple, generous and beautifully structured to show off its currant, plum and blackberry flavors, gently supported by ultrarefined tannins to let the finish go on and on.
2004Spring Valley Vineyard UriahRed Blend  50.002  93
The 2004 Uriah blend is 60% Merlot, 31% Cab Franc, and the rest divided between Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, all estate grown. Ripe Walla Walla fruit, quite rare in 2004, gives structure and sleek, racy, vibrant flavors of boysenberry, currant and cherry. The vineyard’s characteristic wild hay aromatics are less evident, as the fruit soars. This is a wine that should reward significant cellaring time, up to a decade or more.

2005Vietti Barolo - CastiglioneBarolo  45.002  92
Shows sweet berry and perfume on the nose, with rose and raspberry. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a milk chocolate, berry and vanilla aftertaste. Big and chewy. Yet balanced and very pretty
2000Vietti Barolo - LazzaritoBarolo  80.002  94
This shows masses of blackberries and fresh flowers on the nose, turning to licorice. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long finish. This is dense yet fresh. A sleeping giant dressed in silk pajamas

2005Vincent Paris Cornas - Granit 60Rhone  50.001  93
Deliciously ripe, showing crushed plum and blackberry fruit that is kept honest by briary grip, with notes of sweet licorice, lavender and iron. The rich finish has a rock solid-structure and is built for the cellar.
2006Vincent Paris Cornas - Granit 60Rhone  55.001  93
Really racy, with a terrific beam of raspberry ganache, blackberry and licorice flavors coursing over a bright minerally spine. The long finish really sings with purity and drive.
2007Vincent Paris Cornas - Granit 60Rhone  55.001  92
Superfresh and very driven, with iron and sanguine notes rippling through the silky layers of blackberry and black cherry. Tangy olive and tobacco notes chime in on the lengthy finish. There's latent depth to this

2008William Fevre Vaulorent Premier CruChablis  47.002  92
There's a little oak influence to this white, but it melds well with the clean lemon, floral and mineral flavors. Steely and firm, finishing like spring water running over stones.
2005Zanzibar Cellars SandraRed Blend  50.000  93
Velvety and generous. A plush mouthful of blueberry, plum, cream and dark chocolate flavors that echo through the long, resonant finish. Strikes a superb balance between rich fruit, savory side notes and good depth. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah.
