| he Cumberland Reserve is always one of our most cellar-worthy wines, showing great depth of fruit and powerful structure. This wine will be at its best between 3 and 8 years after the vintage. The 2005 Cumberland Reserve showcases the best aspects of the vintage with bright acidity, dark color, lower alcohol than past vintages, wonderful red fruit character and intense spicy aromatics. This will prove to be one of our best Cumberland blends yet!" Winemaker's Comments |

| Pale pink. Aromas of dried flowers, earth and talc, with red berries in the background. Dry, restrained and sophisticated, with subtly complex pinot-dominated flavors. Tactile but quite suave. An unusually grown-up style of rose, finishing with excellent persistence. I'd be in no hurry to drink this. |

| 1989 | Chateau d' Yquem | S'emillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend | | $250 val. | 1 | 94-98pts |
| This had fairly deep color, but what is not to like about such an ethereal wine that was matched perfectly with a fantastic seared foie gras dish? There is a hint of seawater on the nose, ripe botrytis, just exploding from the glass. The weight on the palate is absolutely fantastic, unctuous, huge viscosity in the mouth. Wonderfully balanced. I put my pen down for this one and just enjoyed |
| Glorious marmalade / light amber, great depth, a backing of spicy oak but layered in front is toffee, caramelised orange, roast pineapple and buttermilk. Fascinating wine, still a bracing acid backbone, a lifetime to live still. I like this more than the 1988 tried on two occasions. (1037 views) |

| A intense smoky, savoury nose - overtly modern in its style, with a touch of mint. The palate is very toast with layers of new oak. Damson, plum and 5 spice. It just lacks some personality for me. Needs more balance and poise. |

| he 1998 Far Niente Estate Cabernet Sauvignon has subtle blackberry and cassias flavors complemented by cedar oak aromas as well as the typical "dusty" components traditionally found among the finest soils of the western vineyards of Oakville. The vintage has produced round California ripeness with a firm core that maintains grace. The blending has helped produce a wine that is soft and layered now, while further bottle aging will reward your patience with a longer and more velvety texture. |

| Rating: 93 points Drink 2005-2009 The distinctive striking minerality of the 2002 Chardonnay distinguishes it from many of its peers in California. Its light gold/green color is followed by lovely aromas of crisp citrus, honeysuckle, lemon oil, and stones. Medium to full-bodied, with zesty acidity, a subtle touch of wood, and a long finish, it is a steely, California version of a cross between a grand cru Chablis and a topnotch Macon-Villages. It should drink well for 3-4 years. |

| The Wine Advocate The following sleeper of the vintage strongly suggests that La Vieille Cure is becoming one of Fronsac’s two or three finest estates. The finest wine yet made at La Vieille Cure, the 2003 should be on the shopping lists of consumers seeking tremendous quality/price rapport. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by sweet aromas of scorched earth, black raspberries, creme de cassis, and notions of cherries, smoke, and crushed rocks. This big, full-bodied, dense, captivating wine is structured as well as exceptionally long. Anticipated maturity: 2007- |

| 2003 | Marston Family Vineyard | Cabernet | | $90 | 3 | 91 WS |
| The 2003 is a huge, concentrated, inky/blue/purple-tinged Cabernet Sauvignon revealing a sweet nose of acacia flowers intermixed with blueberries, minerals, and underbrush. A rich attack is followed by hard tannins and a tough finish. Although this wine possesses outstanding potential, it is questionable whether it will all come together in a seamless display of fruit and structure. This vineyard, which is farmed by Beringer, also produces wines under its moniker guided by well-known Napa Valley wine guru, Philippe Melka. Five hundred cases of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon are produced in a normal vintage, and Melka’s biggest challenge has been to tame the hard, tough tannins that routinely emerge. |
| This wine showcases the distinction of the specific blocks we select and cultivate by hand. Blocks 3A, 3C and 6A are the heart of the vineyard expressing the very best characteristics of the Marston mountain fruit. Though Marston Family Vineyard is part of the Spring Mountain Appellation, it has its own unique microclimatedue to the location sitting south easterly facing, exhibits dark berry fruits and is harvested later than most other vineyards in Napa Valley. Intense and focused, the palate exhibits flavors of black currant, violet, acacia & blueberry. The aromas of stones, berries, wildflowers and earth are packed into the wine with complex, well structured tannins. This wine will age well for many years. |

| Samantha Starr wines are made by Talbott Vineyards Winemaker Sam Balderas, and the grapes are sourced from Monterey's Sleepy Hollow Vineyard. This delicious Chardonnay was stainless steel fermented to retain the pure fruit flavors and aged in French oak barrels for added complexity. FOOD PAIRINGS: Crab cakes, Olives, Oysters, Stuffed Clams, Smoked Salmon, Chicken, Shrimp or Pork with cream sauce. In general, avoid tomato based dishes - the sharp acidity of the tomato doesn't go well with the buttery flavors in a Chardonnay. |

| 2002 Topaz Late Harvest California Dessert Wine. Semillion and Sauvignon Blanc grapes that have been infected with noble rot (Botrytis) don’t look very good, but they make great wine. The 2002 Topaz is a perfect example. The rotten wizened grapes are pressed, and slowly fermented in barrels. Complex flavors of honey, citrus and nuts develop in the barrel, and the thick golden wine is profoundly rich. One of the best desert wines in Napa. |

| 1998 | 1st Grand Cru Classse Chateau Pavie | Bordeaux | | $99/$175 | 1 | 92 WS |
| WA 95 Pts. - The 1999 Pavie is a candidate for "wine of the vintage". It boasts an opaque ruby/purple color in addition to gorgeous aromas of crushed minerals, smoke, licorice, cherry liqueur, and black currants. The wine is exceptionally pure and multilayered, with stunning texture and overall balance. The tannin level suggests 3-4 years of cellaring is warranted; it should age gracefully for 25+ years. If readers are wondering why Pavie has become so much better under the administration of Chantal and Gerard Perse, keep in mind that yields are one-third of what they were under the previous owners. WS 92 Pts. - Yummy red. Attractive aromas of plums, berries, tobacco and smoke. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, juicy finish. Best after 2005. 1,665 cases made. |

| 2005 | Beaux Fre'res Beaux Fre'res The Upper Terrace | Pinot Noir | | $90 | 3 | 95WS |
| The 2005 Upper Terrace has much of the Beaux Frères Vineyard.s character, but exhibits a deeper color, more depth, and even more color and richness with unmistakable floral and forest floor components that clearly suggest a grand cru red Burgundy from the Cotes de Nuits, notably Vosne-Romanee or Flagey-Echezeaux. We believe that this is because the Dijon clones, which are the best materials from Burgundy, seem to be best suited for Oregon's cooler climates. With these clones planted in the steeply sloped vineyard, this wine always comes across as meatier, richer, and fuller than the Beaux Frères Vineyard cuvee which is largely a blend of Pommard and Wadenswil clones. The wines from this vineyard exhibit a Burgundian aromatic profile and the vineyard tends to crop lower almost naturally, so the wine seems to have even more density, and richness than our Beaux Frères Vineyard. This 2005 will benefit from 1-3 years of bottle age, and be drinkable over the following 12-15+ years. (880 cases produced.) |
| 2004 | Beaux Fre'res Beaux Fre'res The Vineyard | Pinot Noir | | $80 | 6 | 94WS |
| his wine is made from fruit grown on the original Beaux Freres estate vineyard. It primarily consists of Pommard & Wädenswil clones on their own roots planted between 1988 and 1995. Mike farms organically, does not irrigate, and is beginning to follow the path of Biodynamic farming. Made from the smallest yields since 1994, it is not surprising that this is an extremely concentrated effort. |

| 2005 | Beaux Fre'res Beaux Fre'res The Vineyard | Pinot Noir | | $75 | 6 | 94WS |
| After 16 vintages it would seem easy to compare the newborn 2005 with a previous year, but it is actually quite difficult. We have had vintages where, because of growing conditions, the wines are delicate, light, and feminine. And other years where, because of low yields and climatic circumstances , the wines are powerful, rich, and dense. 2005 appears to be a blend of both styles. The color is dark ruby with plenty of purple highlights. The nose is very extroverted and shows no intention of shutting down. At present the wine reveals pure blue and black fruits, (primarily black cherries, raspberries, and a hint of blackberries) along with tell-tale beet root, earth and herb notes. In the mouth the wine is rich and full bodied, yet displays a lighter, more delicate finish. It is somewhat of a paradox that such an intense wine could also be light on its feet, but that is the style of this vintage. We believe that this season.s unique growing conditions leading up to harvest gave us the ideal grapes to produce a wine with impeccable balance in acidity, alcohol, tannin, and depth of fruit. This wine should be relatively approachable in its youth, but because of its balance evolve for 10-12 more years. Over the last sixteen years, we have seen how well our wines have evolved. They have done what we have always hoped, improving in the bottle, which is no easy task. (2700 cases produced.) |

| Wine Spectator: This one has layers and layers of gorgeous plum, blueberry and currant flavors on a satiny, plush frame, shaded with lovely exotic mushroom notes as the finish rolls on and on. Beautifully put together and pointened toward longevity, expect this to last. Drink now through 2014. |
| Stephen Tanzer's IWC: Dark red. Fresh, pungent and spicy, with scents of cola, fresh herbs and underbrush, plus a hint of celery seed. Very fresh on the palate, with bright dark and red berry flavors, chewy texture and good balance. The dark fruit flavors and musky, herbal tones play nicely against each other, leaving a sweet, smoky impression on the finish. A grown-up style of Oregon pinot. |

| 2007 The Beaux Frères Vineyard Pinot Noir $80 | This wine is dark ruby in color with a pure sweet nose of black cherries, a hint of strawberry and white flowers along with a waft of forest floor. Some of the characteristics remind us of the 2005 vintage- the vivid aromatics, plush, sleek texture and the seamless integration of acidity, tannin, alcohol and wood. This is a Pinot Noir at its sexiest and most feminine. Still, it is a medium to full bodied wine of substance and surprising length. Somewhat reminiscent of the 1995 but far more concentrated fruit and to our mind dramatically better wine. We attribute this to the extensive work in the vineyard and the experience we have gained in the twelve years that have elapsed. This wine may be drunk in its youth, but has the concentration and balance to age gracefully for 10-15 years. |

| n a blind tasting you just might confuse it as a Grenache-Mourvèdre blend from the Southern Rhône, as murky fruits and wet hay dominate the aroma profile. | Fantastic and subtle, with blackberries, spices, light leather and cinnamon. Full-bodied, with a slow start, then it spirits off with fabulously silky tannins and a long, long finish. This is like a super 1996. The owner likes it better than his 1990 and 1989. Score range: 95-100 (JS) |
| 2004 | Chateau Mouton Rothschild Chateau Mouton Rothschild (Paullac) | Bordeaux | | $184.99 | 2 | 94 RP94 WS |
| WSJ:Our favorite, for the second time in three years, was Mouton Rothschild, which makes it a relative bargain considering that it was the least-expensive wine. It's a blockbuster: big, rich and earthy, certainly the densest, most concentrated Mouton we've ever had. This will get better and better in the years to come.Best of tasting and best value. The richest, deepest, earthiest Mouton we've had, with concentrated, super-ripe fruit, terrific balancing acidity and all sorts of layers. Soul-satisfying. |
| Expressive aromas of currant, coffee, dark chocolate, tobacco, mocha and smoked meat. Juicy, spicy and classically dry; rather tight and backward for 2004 and not a particularly fleshy style, even if it's nicely sweetened by nutty oak. But this boasts excellent precision and verve and the aromatic finishing flavors build slowly and steadily. Firm acids and tannins give this plenty of backbone for development in bottle. With extended aeration, the texture became silkier. |
| 2004 | Chateau Mouton-Rothschild Chateau Mouton -Rothchild Paulliac | Bordeaux | | $189.99 | 2 | 94 WS |
| "This estate’s harvest began on September 29 and ended on October 15. Unlike the massive, tannic, blockbuster 2003, Mouton’s 2004 is a more linear, streamlined effort fashioned from a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. It possesses a deep ruby/purple color along with classic aromas of creme de cassis, pain grille, espresso, spice, and cedar. Medium-bodied and fragrant,...it offers good sweetness, crisp acidity, and loads of purity as well as length. Consider it a modern day version of their 1966 or 1988. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2028." -From the Wine Advocate |
| 1996 | Chateau Palmer Chateau Palmer | Bordeaux | | $115.58 | 2 | 91 |
| This wine, a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, is performing well after its July, 1998 bottling. It boasts an impressively saturated purple color, in addition to a backward yet intense nose of black plums, currants, licorice, and smoke. Following terrific fruit on the attack, the wine's structure and tannin take over. There is plenty of sweet fruit, and the tannin is well-integrated, but the wine requires 7-8 years of cellaring. |
| 91 points Wine Spectator: "Dark-colored, and bubbling over with raspberry, black currant and spices. Full- to medium-bodied, with well-integrated, silky tannins and a spicy, fruity aftertaste. Palmer is always a joy to taste and the '96 is no exception. Best after 2002." According to Robert Parker: "Palmer has finally invested in a new state of the art winemaking facility, with temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, and an impressive new cuverie. A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, the 1996 is a powerful, dense, backward wine that recalls the 1986. The wine is more difficult to judge because of the high Merlot component, and the fact that this wine has not yet totally fleshed out. It is an impressively built, medium to full-bodied, muscular, rich claret. If it develops more complexity and puts on a bit of weight, it will be an outstanding Palmer, with less early charm than top vintages, but built for the long haul. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025 |

| This dark ruby Pinot Noir has rich aromas of ripe blackberries, cinnamon, allspice, cedar and roasted coffee. The equally compelling flavors consist of raspberries, currants and a bit of a wild fruit or a briary component that gives an overall lift to the palate. Although the 2004 vintage was a bit warmer and drier than we typically see, the altitude of this vineyard helped to maintain the bright acidity that keeps this wine balanced. Although there is still some mouth coating tannins, this wine is drinking well now and should improve for 5 to 8 years |

| Wines like this are as enjoyable as any I’ve had in the past year. Its ripe and juicy berry and cherry fruit is intense, which came as a bit of a surprise - When I decanted the wine and saw the light colour, my first thought was, “Oh oh…”… but it meant nothing. The 14.5% booze and sexy fruit fill the wine’s body out and make for a silky texture… and did I mention all the luscious fruit?? It’s a smooth and slightly slutty sipper - Gorgeous stuff. |

So we bottle this special cuvee in honor of that Magic Night when wine transcends the moment and becomes immortalized as one of life's great wine experiences |

Foley II in 1998 and is prized for its elevation and variety of soil types and exposures, including a magnificent 230-acre south-facing hillside vineyard. The resulting wine was aged for one year in 25% new French oak and is a deep garnet color. The nose is redolent of dark blak and blue fruit with hints of mushroom, black tea and smoked meat. In the mouth, the wine shows well-integrated tannins framing plump, juicy fruit with just a hint of spice. Delightful now, this wine has plenty of stuffing to age for another 5-10 years. |

| In a word, this wine is stunning. Even before the grapes came into the winery late last August, we knew this would be the best Fumé Blanc we have produced. It’s very much in the style of our 2003, with a floral and citrus bouquet, exuberant ripe pink grapefruit, spice, and the brisk acidity that make this wine such a good food partner or crisp and refreshing on a warm summer day. Extremely low yields in 2004 (only 3 tons per acre – minuscule for this varietal) resulted in an amazing concentration of flavors – mango, passion fruit, a hint of guava – while retaining the acidity and balance Grgich Hills is known for. Alas, low yields also mean that we produced less of this lovely wine than last year – stock up today! |

| Winemaker Notes - The Cabernet Sauvignon from Hartwell Vineyards is dark and flavorful, but with freshness and a natural acid balance that is pure Stags Leap. The depth of color is impressive, while the tannins are full and round, providing structure and age ability. On the nose aromas of bing cherry, anise, and currant rise from the glass. The entry is powerful, with an explosion of blackberry, cassis, brown sugar, clove and exotic spices. The wine has a full mouth feel, with ample tannin and an impression of dark chocolate that melts away on the finish. This wine is powerful in its youth, and should continue to age gracefully over the next 10-15 years. |

| It’s that time of year again: claim your Ken Wright Cellars Pinot Noir while you can! On our annual trip to Carlton, once again we found the Canary Hill to be the most impressive vineyard in the Ken Wright Cellars 2006 vintage. So we crafted a barrel equal to the title, Cuvée L&E. Classic Canary Hill aromas of red cherry fruit, iron and game segue to a palate full of rich, succulent fruit, vanilla oak and spice, all wrapped in a wonderful, silky texture. This lip-smacking wine will drink well young, but should be able to cellar for another five years. |
| KEN WRIGHT is the foremost producer of pinot noir in Oregon. He’s been making wine here for nearly twenty years, and was a pioneer in developing single- vineyard pinot noir bottlings. Ken’s commitment to quality wine regardless of cost or effort has helped him produce stunning wines from every vintage of the past 13 years since he started his eponymous winery. |

This bottling is comprised of the Wadenswil, Dijon 777, Dijon 667, Dijon 115, and Pommard clones. The wine is firmer than Canary Hill in its youth but evolves beautifully after a few years in bottle to show black fruits and fresh, healthy earth scents. Approximately 650 cases are produced. | Steve Kistler has backed off extraction for his Pinot Noirs, resulting in more ethereal (but not light) Pinots that are less burdened down by tannin in their youth, with each vineyard’s distinctive fruit and terroir coming through with much greater intensity. After experimenting with some Dijon clones, Kistler became convinced that the best clone for cool climate vineyards is the Calera Clone from California, and based on what he has achieved, I can’t argue. |

The texture of the wine, a heritage to its mountain location, is very rich and highly extracted with an abundance of powerful, but velvety tannins in the mid palate. | This full bodied chardonnay displays fine underlying acidity and a long finish, with hints of cardamom, anise and hazelnut which add interest to the fundamental lemon-mineral flavors. Of all Mount Eden’s estate-grown wines, our chardonnay is most in need of further bottle aging at time of release, requiring an additional two to four years to fully reveal its true character. Many vintages are still fresh and enjoyable after fifteen years; this wine is considered one of the longest-lived white wines produced in California. |

| This is Merryvale`s fourth offering of Carneros Pinot Noir. The grapes for this wine are from Block A1 of the Stanley Ranch Vineyard which is situated near the Napa River and benefit greatly from cool winds and fog from every direction. | The 2005 has sweet cherries and strawberries at its core laced with tobacco smoke and earthy spices. There are some stiff tannins that will resolve relatively quickly and are not really adding largesse to the wine. Ultimately this is a very attractive, stylish and full-flavored medium-bodied Pinot Noir which is what this site should really express. We'll miss it in the line-up. 265 cases bottled." -Winery |
| On the nose the wine primarily exhibits fresh mulch, followed by a layer of white cherries. In the mouth the body is med-full, with a velvety finish, typical of well-made pinot. The palate exhibits red currant, freshly ground black peppercorn, and blueberry on attack, translating to cinnamon on the mid-palate. The wine finishes long with cedar/ cigar box notes. Having a lively acidity and firm tannic structure, this wine should age well. With an acidic, Delice de Burgogne, the wine revealed more fruit, esp. a pleasant finish of blueberry preserves. |

| 2005 | Penner-Ash Penner-Ash Rubeo | Pinot Noir | | $20 | 6 | |
| Lynn Penner-Ash is a major star in Oregon wine. Her pinot noirs first for Rex Hill and then for her own label are almost always gorgeous, balanced wines of style. But this mix of about three-quarters pinot and one-quarter syrah is perhaps the most fun wine of hers I’ve ever tasted. The two components do exactly what you’d expect them to: delicate red fruit and earthy aromatics from the pinot, and deep, briny, booming notes from the syrah. The irony of this being that Burgundian winemakers had a long, unofficial habit of bulking up their thinner vintages with a slug of syrah from the northern Rhone. Penner-Ash happened to do something not dissimilar, though of course their pinot grapes were pretty good to begin with, and simply announced their intentions upfront. To my knowledge, the ‘02 Rubeo is long gone, but there’s been an NV release and maybe an ‘04 by now. Even if it’s not the ‘02, grab some anyway. With Willamette pinot and Del Rio syrah, this encapsulates Oregon’s red-wine bounty in a single glass. Featured in: My March 24 column on quirky red wine blends. |

| The 2003 is a completely different blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a tiny dollop of Petit Verdot. It offers noteworthy aromas and flavors of coffee roast intermixed with mocha, chocolate, black currants, cherries, and licorice. Drink it over the next 7-10 years." 90-92 points |
| Spectacularly rich and intense, this second release vintage of L’Esprit des Pavots displays all of the usual features which characterize Les Pavots, the Terroir which the fruit is from: blueberry, cassis, licorice, chocolate, cedar and roasted coffee beans. The fruit of the young vines brought additional aromas of red cherries and red pepper to the complex bouquet. Touches of tangerine and sweet vanilla complete the elegant bouquet. Rich and intense, the 2004 La Carrière presents on the palate wonderful concentration and elegance. | 2003 | Peter Michael Winery Les Pavots | Cabernet | | $150/200 | 2 | 94 Parker |
| 94 points Parker: "The 2003 Les Pavots (61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 13% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot) exhibits notes of melted licorice, tapenade, damp earth, black currants, and cedar. Slightly more herbaceous than the 2004, with notions of barbecued meat as well as blue and black fruits, this full-bodied, dense 2003 may not have quite the potential of the 2002 or 2001, but it is a brilliant effort to consume between 2008-2020." |

Very ripe, with hints of tropical fruits, subtle wood, decent acidity, and a fresh, lively, full-bodied feel, this wine should drink nicely for 5-6 years. This 121-acre estate with 114 producing acres of vineyard all located in Knight’s Valley continues to be at the top of their game and I can’t recommend the wines highly enough |
| 2007 | Peter Michael Winery Peter Michael Belle Cote | Chardonnay | | $75 | 4 | 97 RP |
| Very intense and powerfully hedonistic aromas of lychee nuts, citrus, rose petal and orange blossom, with a background of mineral, bergamot orange, candied orange, yellow peach, nutmeg, whole nut and toasted almond. The rich seamless palate is weighty in the mouth and very creamy. Notes of brioche and pain grillé coupled with crisp natural acidity complete the mouth feel. The wine is already expressive and will continue to develop for at least a decade. |
| 2005 | Peter Michael Winery Peter Michael Cuv'ee Indigene | Chardonnay | | $110 | 1 | |
| Aromas of candied orange, lemon drop, dry apricot, dry fig and Mirabelle plum, interact with touches of vanilla and exotic elements such as mango, coconut and pineapple to form this remarkable multi-layered and intense bouquet. Complexity, richness and concentration characterize the palate of this dramatic edition of Cuvée Indigène, promised to age gracefully for at least a decade. |

| Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "Full, deep ruby-red. Wilder aromas of plum, flint and smoky oak, with a cooler suggestion of menthol. Sweeter on first blush than the Pavots but with less depth to the flavors of cherry and brown spices. Finishes broad and rich, but with rougher tannins than the suaver flagship Bordeaux blend. 90 points." 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Ver |

| 2006 | Peter Michael Winery Peter Michael L'Apres-Midi | Sauvignon Blanc | | $48 | 4 | |
| The 2006 L’Après–Midi is a superb expression of our estate’s terroir. Intense and multi-layered, the bouquet is dominated by honeysuckle, hawthorn, gooseberry, lime, white flesh peach, William pear and dried apricot, completed by elegant touches of acacia, white pepper, guava, quince and wet stone. Rich and zesty, the flavors are reminiscent of the aromas and the mouth fell is seamless. The strong mineral background, stamp of the estate counterbalances the overall richness, giving a superb refinement. The finish is layered, very long and elegant. Built to age, the 2006 L’Après–Midi is already revealing itself. |
| 2007 | Peter Michael Winery Peter Michael L'Apres-Midi Estate Sauvignon Blanc | Sauvignon Blanc | | $48 | 2 | 93 WA |
| 93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright, pale yellow. Vibrant aromas of citrus peel, green apple, gooseberry, mint and crushed stone; I was reminded of Loire Valley chenin and Chablis. Then fat but quite firm in the mouth, with lime, lemon drop and honeysuckle flavors complicated by a metallic whiff (this is fermented in stainless steel and does not go through malolactic fermentation) |
| 2004 | Peter Michael Winery Peter Michael L'Esprit des Pavots | Bordeaux | | $75 | 9 | |
| The 2004 L’Esprit des Pavots displays all of the features that characterize the Les Pavots terroir: blueberry, vanilla beans, licorice, chocolate, cedar and coffee. Spectacularly rich and intense, the fruit of the younger vines brings additional aromas of red cherries, plums and red pepper to the complex bouquet. The palate is full-bodied, rich and concentrated, exhibiting abundant, youthful yet supple tannins and a lingering finish. Fruit forward and enjoyable at release time, this great wine should age well for a decade. |
| 2005 | Peter Michael Winery Peter Michael La Carriere | Chardonnay | | $75 | 4 | 90 WS |
| La Carrière, French for “the quarry,” aptly describes this vineyard's bowl shape and its tremendously rocky soils. Situated between 1600 and 1800 feet above sea level on steep mountain slopes exceeding forty percent in grade, the vineyard has ideal southern and southeastern exposures. The vineyard’s shallow rocky soils provide excellent drainage, low fertility and regularly the lowest yields on the estate. La Carrière with its concentrated “liquid minerality” effectively reflects its mountainous origin. |
| A big, bold style, with plenty of toasty oak and elements of graphm crackers and wood. But laso shows ripe, rich pear, apple and honeyed fruit that fans out nicely on the palate. |
| 2006 | Peter Michael Winery Peter Michael La Carriere | Chardonnay | | $80 | 4 | 94RP |
| "The 2006 La Carriere (2,600 cases) has plenty of leesy notes intermixed with honeysuckle, orange rind, crushed rock, peach, and spice. The wine has beautifully integrated wood and is full-bodied. It is a beautiful mineral-laced Chardonnay to drink over the next 7-8 years. This 121-acre estate with 114 producing acres of vineyard all located in Knight’s Valley continues to be at the top of their game and I can’t recommend the wines highly enough." (12/07 |

| Terroir-driven minerality remains the signature of this vineyard, with aromas of pastry, lily, hazelnut and pear. Accents of mandarin orange, acacia, honey and vanilla complete the bouquet. Presenting wonderful concentration and elegance on the palate, the wine is sculpted, rich, intense, and creamy. Notes of citrus oils, white peaches and lemon frame the minerality. Its bright acidity and minerality will allow it to age for 2 decades, much like its Burgundian cousins from Puligny-Montrachet. |
| 2005 | Peter Michael Winery Peter Michael Le Moulin Rouge | Pinot Noir | | $95 | 3 | |
| The 2005 Le Moulin Rouge leads with intense aromas of raspberry and red cherry completed by hints of Earl Grey tea and graphite. Opening further, the bouquet reveals additional aromas such as toasted wild strawberries, raspberries, Grillottes cherries with cloves and cinnamon in background. In the mouth the wine is intensely flavored, blending richness and delicacy as the flavors stretch to a long fruit-filled finish. The 2005 Le Moulin Rouge drinks well young yet will age for a decade. |
| 2006 | Peter Michael Winery Peter Michael Le Moulin Rouge | Pinot Noir | | $95 | 2 | 93 WA |
| Good deep red. Subtle, complex nose offers raspberry, smoke, earth, underbrush, black tea and minerals, lifted by exotic spices. Lush, broad and dry, with dominant flavors of plum, smoked meat and brown spices. More soil- than fruit-driven initially, but a strong raspberry flavor emerged with aeration. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and some medicinal earthy spices. The fruit here is 100% destemmed and because the grapes are harvested at very cool temperature the fermentation normally takes five to seven days to start, said winemaker Nic Morlet. This is quite Burgundian in style." |

| 2005 | Peter Michael Winery Peter Michael Les Pavots | Blend | | $175.00 | 4 | 95 RP |
| Les Pavots is Peter Michael's proprietary red blend, combining cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot and petit verdot from the Les Pavots Vineyard in Sonoma's Knights Valley. 95 points Robert Parker: "The 2005 Les Pavots (3,600 cases of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot) is a sensational wine, with a style that suggests a hypothetical blend of a great St.-Emilion and Pomerol. Chocolatey cassis notes intermixed with incense, licorice, and a hint of black olive are present in this wine. When it hits the palate, it comes across as very Pomerol-like, with lushness, full body, and opulence. The tannins are sweet, the pH high, and the wine gorgeously full, pure, dense, and long. It’s a terrific example of non-interventionalist winemaking that has turned out a beautiful, silky-textured wine that should ageeffortlessly for 15+ years. Like so many 2005s, this wine has really put on weight since I tasted it last year. This 121-acre estate with 114 producing acres of vineyard all located in Knight’s Valley continues to be at the top of their game and I can’t recommend the wines highly enough. I was surprised when I showed up at Peter Michael to find both Nicolas Morlet, who replaced his brother Luc, and Luc Morlet himself, were at my tasting. It seems that Luc is still doing consulting work with his brother firmly entrenched at the winery |

| 2005 | Peter Michael Winery Peter Michael Mon Plaisir | Chardonnay | | $75 | | |
| True to its name, this wine is indeed a true pleasure, open and intense. It displays an exquisite bouquet of lemon cream, honey and candied pineapple. The palate is rich, full-bodied and creamy with beautiful notes of fresh lemon, Mirabelle plum and golden delicious apple coupled with brioche and a flinty mineral character. Hints of pain grillé and hazelnut complete the long final mouth feel of this wine. |
| Mon Plaisir has been produced since 1987 from a vineyard located in the hills above Alexander Valley. The cool and low yielding vineyard enhances the extracted perfume that makes Mon Plaisir a rare single vineyard designation. This year, long alcoholic and malolactic fermentations allowed us to develop even further its intense and complex bouquet, as well as a round and very 'gras' mouthfeel. |

Medium to full-bodied with notes of honeyed pineapple, nectarine, and some spice, the wine exhibits good acidity, purity, and plenty of length. Drink it over the next several years. One of Napa’s most prominent and respected wineries, Shafer is a poster boy for remarkable and consistent quality across the board. All of this is the work of the brilliant father and son team of John and Doug Shafer as well as their long-term winemaker and vineyard manager, Elias Fernandez. With over 200-plus acres of estate holdings, and 55 surrounding their winery in Stags Leap, this is a winery that never seems to disappoint." (WA) |

An expressive, full-bodied, smoky, flamboyant, intense effort that is more evolved and approachable than vintages such as 2003 and 2001, it is a stunningly aromatic, rich wine to drink over the next 10-15 years. | 97 pts. Parker on 12/31/2008 One of the world’s most prodigious Cabernet Sauvignons is Shafer’s 2,000-case cuvèe called Hillside Select. Always 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 100% new French oak for a whopping 32 months, it boasts a gorgeous track record dating back to the early nineties, and just about every recent vintage has flirted with perfection. The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select performed even better this year than it did in 2007. It possesses an inky/ruby/purple color, a juicy perfume of black currants, black cherries, graphite, charcoal, and toasty oak, superb opulence, a fleshy mid-palate, a multilayered mouthful, and a dazzling finish. This flamboyant, sexy Hillside Select can be enjoyed now and over the next 20 years. |

| "Deep red. Primary aromas of fresh blackberry, cassis, tobacco and raw meat. Youthfully tangy at first, then took on a sweet, almost liqueur-like cassis and dark berry character with air, along with some sexy notes of vanilla, clove and violet pastille. This has excellent depth but also clarity and focus, finishing with lingering notes of fresh raspberry and blackberry. Very attractive pinot, but in need of some time in bottle." Steve Tanzer 90 |

| The 2005 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon beautifully expresses the full aromatic ripeness of this exemplary vintage. It is full bodied and yet refined, and consistent in its color, aroma, palate and finish. It has a dark garnet color and a nose of black cherry, clove, cinnamon, lavender and licorice. It is seamless on the palate with a solid core of berry fruit, velvety tannins and excellent length. With proper cellaring it should give drinking pleasure through 2032." |

| RP: 90 "The 2001 Merlot (a 6,354-case blend of 94.3% Merlot and 5.7% Cabernet Franc) exhibits fragrant aromas and flavors of espresso roast, coffee beans, smoke, chocolate, and loads of berry fruit. Dense plum/ruby in color with a hedonistic personality, this is a heady, full-bodied wine to drink over the next 7-8 years. | The 2004 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a refined and complex wine that combines subtlety and depth. It has a dark ruby color with a deep red edge and displays aromas of fresh blackberries, violets, cola, nutmeg and licorice. In the mouth, the wine has a juicy attack and offers great expression of fruit and spice on the mid-palate. Its fruit-driven finish is long and elegant. | THE WINE INSIDER TASTING NOTES (1/09): “Simply stated, the new Silver Oak (a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot and Malbec)"tastes expensive", fulfilling this renowned winery's reputation as the benchmark Napa Cabernet! The new 2004 vintage features bold fruit and plush tannins in the beginning and ends with an impressive finish that bodes well for long term aging. Concentrated flavors of cassis, herbs, nutmeg and the typical Silver Oak eucalyptus notes are well defined. This wine illustrates promising depth and balance on the palate, with a delicious core of cassis fruit and a finish featuring a hint dark chocolate that lastes a full 30 seconds. It will continue to drink well through 2020, peaking around 2014…or TONIGHT (after decanting one hour).” |

| 2002 | Silver Oak Cellars Silver Oak Napa Valley | Blend | | $84.99 | 12 | RP 94 |
| Not surprisingly, my favorite Napa bottling is the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and a dollop of Petit Verdot. Aromas of olive-tinged, creme de cassis intermixed with sweet vanillin and smoky oak lead to a sweet, chunky, ripe, cedary wine with an attractive texture, an expansive, fruit-forward style, and a spicy finish. It should drink well for 10-12 years. |

| 2005 | Silver Oak Winery Silver Oak Cabernet Alexander Valley | Cabernet | | $59.99 | 12 | 89 |
| Good deep red-ruby. Dark berries, black cherry and licorice on the nose, with a less exaggerated oak element despite the fact that this was aged in 95% new American barrels. Not particularly sweet, but the mid-palate offers better grip and lift than the 2004, with laid-back flavors of currant, plum and tobacco leaf. Finishes with substantial, slightly dry tannins and good persistence. Incidentally, the production of this wine was increased in the early part of this decade and is now in the 75,000 case range." | winemaker's notes: Grapes for Twomey Sauvignon Blanc come exclusively from our estate property in Calistoga. With its deep, gravelly loam soils, this vineyard is particularly well suited to Sauvignon Blanc and has a long history of producing distinctive wines from this esteemed varietal. The 2008 Twomey Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc beautifully combines minerality with fruitiness. It is light, straw yellow with green highlights. The wine has a nose of fresh lime, cucumber and guava with notes of flintiness. On the palate, the wine has wonderful acid balance and well-defined flavors of citrus and jasmine. There is an echo of minerals in the long, crisp finish. Immediately after harvest, the Sauvignon Blanc grapes were pressed and fermented using selected yeast strains. Fermentation took place in a combination of new, thin-staved French oak barrels, stainless steel drums and tanks. The wine was then aged sur lies for four months and kept at cool temperatures to prevent malolactic fermentation |
| Rated: 88 by Stephen Tanzer, May/Jun 09 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar Pale, bright yellow. Aromatic nose offers pineapple, grapefruit, flowers and a whiff of pepper. Supple but juicy, with an intriguing saline element adding complexity to the lemon, flint and floral flavors. Fresh acidity keeps it vibrant-as does the fact that it was bottled with a screwcap. Owner Ray Duncan bought Stonegate Winery as a home for Twomey in 2003; these vines, which date back to the 1980s, came with that purchase. |

| he 2002 Zinfandel Pesenti Estate, from a 50-year old site planted on pure limestone, tastes like a classic Chateauneuf du Pape made from Grenache. The 16% alcohol is well-concealed in this 700-case cuvee. A deep ruby color is accompanied by sumptuous aromatics of kirsch liqueur kissed with melted licorice, pepper, and spice. There is tremendous precision, surprisingly good acidity (thanks to the limestone soils), and a heady, rich, full-bodied, impressive finish. | I stumbled on the V. Sattui winery on a trip through Napa. As we drove by, the sheer number of people outside the winery was enough to give it a try. Friends of ours that were with us on our trip liked this particular wine so much that they ordered several cases for their wedding reception. While the website's description (found at http://vsattui.com) of the Gamay Rouge's sweetness may be a bit of an understatement, its strawberry overtones are still not overwhelming. Perfect for food from a grill, spicy food, and barbeque. Note: V. Sattui does not have an outside distribution network. |
