| The 1999 Abadia Retuerta reveals an opaque purple color as well as a classy, complex bouquet of flowers, black currants, raspberries, cherries, and vanilla. Full-bodied and elegant, yet concentrated as well as powerful, with impressive overall harmony, this nicely-textured, rich 1999 can be drunk now, or cellared for 10-15 years. | The complex Altare 1998 Insieme is great stuff. It is a Piedmontese wine made in a modern style with the influence of barrique. Notes of tobacco, licorice, black cherries, currants, spice box, and cedar are present as well as blackberry jam and cassis. The wine possesses an unctuous texture, huge body, and gorgeous fruit, sweetness, and length. It should drink well for a decade, although who will have the discipline to wait? The wine is aged in barrique. The blends is The wine is bottled unfiltered, and there are approximately 3,000 bottles. As the score suggests, it is a gorgeous wine, with terrific levels of perfume and intensity." |

Sappy, saline and densely packed; not as fruity as the Pisoni but really blossomed in the glass, showing increasing sweetness and fat with aeration, along with complex flavors of currant, smoked meat and violet. | 1999 | Argiano Solengo | Blend | 3c1-3c2 | 58 | 4 | 94WS/92RP |
| Solengo continues to be one of the hottest wines in Tuscany, now into only its fifth vintage. It is the brainchild of Giacomo Tachis, the veteran winemaker behind great wines such as Sassicaia, Solaia and Tignanello. Originally a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with dashes of Syrah and Sangiovese, Solengo is now a pure Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet and Merlot. It comes from a 12-acre vineyard called Solengo, on the Brunello di Montalcino estate of Argiano. The vineyard enjoys perfect south-facing exposure to the sun, and estate manager Sebastiano Rosa keeps yields down to less than 2 pounds of grapes per vine to ensure optimum ripeness and concentration. It has a generous amount of everything, but in a harmonious, pretty way. There's an abundance of tobacco, cedar and berry character. It's full-bodied and chewy, with loads of fruit and a long, long finish. This is one you should leave in the cellar until 2006. |

| 2001 | Capcanes Mas Donis | Red Wine | 3e10-3e14 | 10 | 10 | WA91 |
| WA 91 (2/2003): Two of the finest values I have discovered thus far in 2003 have to be Capcanes' two vintages of Mas Donis. For its price, it is almost too rich, serious, and potentially age worthy to be believed. The wine is a blend of 80% old vine (80 years) Grenache and 20% Syrah grown in high altitude, steep vineyards. It is aged in used French and American oak. The superb, concentrated 2001 Mas Donis was produced from low yields of 25-30 hectoliters per hectare. Scents of smoke, charcoal, and blueberry liqueur are followed by a dense, rich, corpulent wine with a layered, concentrated feel, and a clean, pure finish. It will benefit from 1-2 years of cellaring, and keep for a decade. |

Spicy, with low acidity, a big, rich, fleshy, full-bodied palate, outstanding texture, and a long, pure finish, it is, to reiterate, one of the best Giscours produced over the last 25 years. | Kirwan's 2000 is a full-bodied, dense, chewy, backward, muscular powerhouse (atypical for a wine from this appellation). The opaque black/purple color is followed by a chewy, concentrated, dense, long, persistent effort with terrific ripeness as well as copious aromas and flavors of cassis, new wood, licorice, and tar. If more nuances emerge, it will merit an even higher score. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2023 |

| Absolutely spectacular from bottle, but frightfully closed and backward, with massive power and structure, the saturated purple-colored 2000 Leoville Barton is one of the greatest wines ever made at this estate. The wine has smoky, earthy notes intermixed with graphite, camphor, damp earth, jammy cassis, cedar, and a hint of mushroom. Enormous, even monstrous in the mouth, with tremendous extraction, broodingly backward, dense flavors, and copious tannins, this should prove to be one of the longest-lived wines of the vintage and one of the most compelling Leoville Bartons ever made. However, anyone unable to defer gratification for at least a decade should steer clear of this behemoth. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2040 |
| 1999 | Chateau Pavie | Bordeaux | box | 100 | 1 | WA96 |
| The 1999 Pavie, a blend of 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, is a dazzling expression of both terroir and winemaking. The mineral content of the limestone found in the hillside vineyards can be tasted, but there are also mindboggling levels of concentration and extract. This is a hedonistic, sweet, expansive, and unctuous wine. The acidity is low, and the color a saturated purple/black. The bouquet offers fabulous minerality along with copious quantities of thick, succulent, black raspberry, cassis, and cherry liqueur fruit, all nicely dosed with subtle smoky new oak. It is a wine of immense richness, layers of concentration, and a viscous, long finish that should ensure 30-40 years of drinkability. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2040. |
| 2000 | Chateau Pavie | Bordeaux | 3m2 | 200 | 1 | WA100 |
| Give Gerard Perse credit. People thought his numerous assurances that 2000 was the greatest Pavie ever produced were premature as well as arrogant. However, after tasting this extraordinary blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon (made from low yields of 28-30 hectoliters per hectare) six separate times in 2003, it is unquestionably one of the most monumental wines Bordeaux has ever produced. Bottled in March, 2003, about nine months later than other 2000s, the color is an opaque purple, and the bouquet offers up notes of liquid minerals, blackberries, cherries, and cassis intermixed with spice box, cedar, and white flowers. On the palate, it exhibits a massive display of richness and extract, yet with pinpoint delineation and vibrancy as well as a 60+ second finish, this is the kind of phenomenal wine that Perse's critics were afraid he might produce - a no-compromise, immortal wonder that represents the essence of one of Bordeaux's greatest terroirs. Life is too short not to own and consume the 2000 Pavie. 2012-2040 |

| Wine Spectator Review: The nose shows loads of plum, spice and meat aromas, as well as hints of licorice. It's full-bodied, with firm, yet velvety textured tannins. It's big and rounded. If you can't afford Las Cases, try some of this. Some might call this a second wine, but it comes from a plot of vineyards not deemed worthy of Léoville Las Cases. So it's like its own estate. Best after 2009. Robert Parker Review: One of the great sleepers of the vintage and probably the best Clos de Marquis I have ever tasted, this wine could easily compete with many of the vintage's classified growths. Dense, opaque purple-colored, with creme de cassis, vanilla, and cherry notes, medium to full body, an unctuous texture, low acidity, and a more evolved style than its bigger sibling, Leoville Las Cases, this dense, chewy, remarkably concentrated and stylish wine should be at its best between 2005 and 2018. |

(03/04) 93 points Robert Parker: "A beautiful effort, the 2001 Cos d'Estournel (65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot) exhibits a poised, noble bouquet of black currants, cedar, spice box, and licorice. A hint of truffles emerges as it sits in the glass. Medium-bodied with sweet fruit (mostly black) and nicely integrated wood, it builds incrementally in the mouth, ending with a 50-second finish. Drink this sylish, restrained yet substantial claret over the next 15+ years. |

| 1998 | D'Arenberg The Dead Arm | Shiraz | 3g2 | 50 | 2 | 96RP |
| RP: "The 1998 The Dead Arm Shiraz (from a vineyard planted prior to 1890) is outrageously rich, spectacular stuff, the likes of which only Australia seems capable of making. Whiners may complain that it is too big, too rich, too flavorful, and too damn good, but this opaque purple-colored offering is loaded with blackberry liqueur, smoke, charcoal, pepper, cassis, and licorice. Unctuously-textured and full-bodied, but neither heavy nor overbearing, the wine's sweet tannin and low acidity are hidden in the cascade of fruit and glycerin that melt on the palate. This riveting, compelling effort can be drunk now, but promises to age well for two decades or more." |
| 2001 | D'Arenberg The Dead Arm | Shiraz | 3g3-3g4 | 50 | 3 | WA98 |
| Readers should be on the look out for the 2001 The Dead Arm Shiraz, one of the greatest examples of this cuvee. Its dense black/purple color is accompanied by celestial aromas of melted licorice, graphite, blackberries, cassis, incense, anise, and toasty oak. Fabulously concentrated, with great purity, an unctuous, viscous texture, and an amazingly long, 60-second plus finish, this fabulous baby will need 5-6 years of cellaring... |

| I have had a lot of great vintages of Dom Perignon, but I do not remember any as impressive as the 1996. Even richer than the brilliant 1990, the 1996 is still tightly wound, but reveals tremendous aromatic intensity, offering hints of bread dough, Wheat Thins, tropical fruits, and roasted hazelnuts. Medium to full-bodied, with crisp acidity buttressing the wines wealth of fruit and intensity, it comes across as extraordinarly zesty, well-delineated, and incredibly long on the palate. Moet-Chandon deserves considerable accolades for this prodigious example of Dom Perignon. Anticipated maturity: now-2020+ |

This impressive offering emerges from relatively young vines (12-20 years of age), and modest yields... this is an realistically priced wine that merits considerable attention...a sexy, full-bodied, opulently-styled effort bursting with black fruits, licorice, smoky, toasty oak, and truffle notes. | Cotarella's flagship wine, his 100% Merlot called Montiano, is aged in 100% new oak casks for 12 months, and bottled with neither fining nor filtration. The terrific opaque purple-colored 1998 Montiano exhibits a spectacular bouquet of black cherry liqueur, licorice, and toasty vanillin. The wine explodes on the palate, offering copious quantities of glycerin, cassis, black cherries, and blackberries. As it sits in the glass, aromas and flavors of melted chocolate and toasty oak emerge. The finish lasts for 40+ seconds. This 1998 should drink well for 10-15 years. Bravo! |

| RP: The profound, dense ruby/purple-colored 1999 Montiano (2,500 cases of 100% Merlot aged in 100% new French oak, and bottled unfined and unfiltered) offers a smorgasbord of aromas, including melted chocolate, espresso, blackberries, cherries, currants, and smoke. Full-bodied, with terrific purity, a multilayered texture, and surprising freshness for a wine of such depth, it can be drunk young, or cellared for 10-15 years. For technicians who care about such things, it has a whopping 37 grams per liter of dry extract. |

| This saturated bluish-black/purple-colored wine seems at first closed and broodingly backward. In the mouth, it is dense, textured, full-bodied, pure, yet, at the same time, closed. This wine is large-sized, with high tannin but equally high extract and richness. | Showing far more impressively from bottle than it ever did from cask, this wine has turned out to be an outstanding Langoa Barton. It reveals a deep, saturated purple color and an expansive, sweet nose of earthy black currants, plum, and melted licorice. Structured, dense, chewy, with full body, good acidity, and plenty of tannin, this is undeniably a wine for patient connoisseurs, or as the French say, a vin de garde. | Wow, this wine has really come on strong. A brilliant effort, it boasts an opaque purple color in addition to a gorgeously sweet nose (make that explosive nose) of blackberries and creme de cassis intermixed with minerals, smoke, and earth. The 2000 is opulent, full-bodied, and much more accessible than either of its two Leoville siblings, Leoville Las Cases or Leoville Barton, with low acidity, sweet tannin, and a layered, sumptuous finish. It continues to improve dramatically and looks to be a great success, rivaling the brilliant 1996 and 1990. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2030. |

| This wine has put on weight and, as impressive as it was from cask, it is even more brilliant from bottle. Only 35% of the crop made it into the 2000 Leoville Las Cases, a blend of 76.8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.4% Merlot, and 8.8% Cabernet Franc. The wine is truly profound, with an opaque purple color and a tight but promising nose of vanilla, sweet cherry liqueur, black currants, and licorice in a dense, full-bodied, almost painfully rich, intense style with no hard edges. This seamless classic builds in the mouth, with a finish that lasts over 60 seconds. Still primary, yet extraordinarily pure, this compelling wine, which continues to build flavor intensity and exhibit additional layers of texture, is a tour de force in winemaking and certainly one of the great Leoville Las Cases. In another sense, it symbolizes / pays homage to proprietor Michel Delon, who passed away in 2000. Michel has been succeeded by his son, Jean-Hubert, another perfectionist. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2040. |

| An utterly profound Lynch-Bages, this wine continues to remind me of a hypothetical blend of the 1990 and 1989. Interestingly, when I asked Jean-Michel Cazes to rank his top four vintages of Lynch-Bages, he ranked the 1989 first, followed by three vintages that he said were essentially equivalent in quality - 1990, 1996, and 2000. The 2000 Lynch-Bages exhibits a dense purple color, loads of glycerin and extract, big, muscular, sweet creme de cassis notes, with hints of new saddle leather, earth, and tobacco leaf. The 2000 is forceful yet plush, with a thick, juicy, succulent mid-palate, ripe tannin, and a long, layered finish. I know it will be tempting to pull corks on this wine in its youth, but it really will not hit its stride for 7-10 years and will last for at least 25. |

This full-bodied, powerful, rich, layered stunner should drink well for a decade. |

| From 60- to 100-year old vines that were saved from the bulldozer during the infamous Barossa “vine pull” (hence the name), the 2005 Shiraz 11th Hour was cropped at .5 tons of fruit per acre, and aged in 100% French oak, of which 5% was new. Sweet, pure aromas of blackberries, blueberries, crushed pepper, and flowers jump from the glass of this inky/purple-colored Shiraz. As one might expect from such tiny yields, it is a wine of great intensity, massive body, and tremendous purity, definition, and length. While still primary, it gives all the indications of being a modern day classic that should last and improve for 15-20 years. Score: 96. —Robert Parker |

| WA: The project of importer Jorge Ordonez, the 2000 Numanthia (100% Tinta de Toro from 70-100-year old vines) was produced from meager yields of one ton of fruit per acre. It spent 19 months in new French oak, with malolactic in barrel, and neither fining nor filtration. This is a massive, dense ruby/purple-colored effort that needs 3-4 years to strut its stuff. Apparently only 5-10% of the production of any given year is used for the Terra Rossa First Growth..Readers should keep an eye out for the 1998 Terra Rossa First Growth after its release later this year. Perhaps the finest Terra Rossa First Growth yet produced. It should drink well for two decades or more |

Dense ruby/purple-colored, with copious quantities of black raspberry and cherry fruit intermixed with spicy oak, this deep, rich, medium to full-bodied 1997 possesses sweet tannin, low acidity, excellent length, and admirable concentration. Already delicious, it promises to improve with 2-3 years of bottle age, and keep for 12-14 years ... atypically long for a 1997." |

| The 1996 could be called the Chateau Latour of Rioja. An opaque black/plum color is followed by aromas of minerals, cigar tobacco, cedar, lead pencil, and sweet black currant, plum, and cherry fruit. One of the greatest young Riojas I have ever tasted, it exhibits full body, a huge, concentrated palate feel, an immense, chewy texture, and high tannin in the finish. The proprietor, who started this bodega in 1989, was not satisfied with anything until 1994, when the first wine was released. This looks to be a prodigious Rioja that should age effortlessly for three decades. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030. To the proporietor's credit, no 1997 was produced. |

| RP: "The 1999 releases continue to push quality to extraordinary heights. Rivettis blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Nebbiolo, the 1999 Pin Monferrarto Rosso, is an exotic, ripe, luxuriously intense effort displaying extravagant flavors that border on excess. It is voluptuously-textured with intense aromas of red and black fruits, smoke, and new oak. While there is a tendency to think of this as an internationally-styled offering, Nebbiolo gives the wine a finesse and complexity not found in most new breed wines. Its texture, richness, and thickness are a total turn-on. Who knows how it will age, but certainly it is impossible to resist at present. My instincts suggest drinking it over the next 7-8 years, but it may be uncommonly long-lived." |

| 2002 | Torbreck The Struie | Shiraz | 3j11-3j12 | 50 | 4 | WA95,WS94 |
| One of TorbreckÍs newest offerings is the 2002 The Struie, a 100% Shiraz cuvee from the cooler climate, high altitude vineyards of Eden Valley blended with fruit from Barossa, which provides more power and intensity. This structured effort reveals a French-tasting profile, but with the noteworthy ripeness found in a great Barossa vintage. A blend of 40-year-old Eden Valley Shiraz vines and 80-year-old Barossa Shiraz, the 2002 was aged 18 months in a combination of French oak (80% old and 20% new). Its dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by a big, rich perfume of white chocolate intermixed with loamy soil, black cherry, blackberry, pepper, and currant aromas. Intense and medium to full-bodied yet elegant, it should drink well for 10-15 years. Score: 95. —Robert Parker |

| (WA) says "...Smoky and balsamic on the nose with intense and expansive notes of raspberries and blackberries, cloves, mint, and high-roast coffee, its packed, strappingly muscular, and dense flavors continue in a seamless flow over the palate, softening as they move but still totally mouth-filling and explosively powerful. The only regret is that these wines are released too early and will probably be drunk too early as well – this is a bottle which I would not touch until 2007..." |

| 2000 | Vall Llach | | 3f3 | 60 | 2 | WA96+ |
| "WA:The flagship cuvee from proprietor Luis Llach, a well-known local folk singer, is the 2000 Vall Llach. A blend of 50% old vine Carignan, 35% Merlot, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, it boasts an opaque purple color as well as a gorgeous bouquet of crushed black raspberries intermixed with powdered stones, white flowers, blackberries, and licorice. Once past the perfume, this is a wine of great purity and presence with a full-bodied, concentrated, layered mouthfeel. It looks to be a brilliant Priorato that should hit its stride in 5-6 years, and last for two decades. It spent 15 months in new French oak prior to bottling, and there are 150 cases available for America. WA (#05503) |
